How the Grinch Stole Passwords

How the Grinch Stole Passwords

It’s a holiday classic. Everyone knows the story of the green, grumpy Grinch who despises Christmas and plans to ruin the holiday for all the cheerful citizens of Whoville. Disguising himself as Santa Claus and strapping antlers on his dog Max to look like a reindeer, the Grinch rides a sleigh from his mountaintop cave and sneaks into town to steal every last holiday-related item from every home in Whoville.

But due to editing for time and the young age of the target audience, there was a more malicious side to the story that landed on the cutting room floor.

The Grinch realized that ruining Christmas for all the Whos in Whoville is a one-time crime. Sure, he’d wreck their holiday, but in a few weeks they’d get over it (actually, sooner). But if he also stole all the Whos’ identities, credentials, and personal data, well that would cause a lot of pain for a long, long time.

So, the Grinch trained Max to sniff out passwords. Down the chimneys they would go, into every house in Whoville. While the Grinch stuffed sacks with toys, trees and trimmings, Who Hash, and roast beasts for the feast, Max looked for lists of passwords under desk blotters, written on notes stuck to monitors or pinned to the wall. He even nudged the mouse on all the Whos’ PCs, waking up web browsers to steal all their credentials stored in a browser app.

Easy peasy. The Grinch left Whoville that night with a sleigh full of Christmas goods plus a treasure trove of Whoville dataThe Grinch left Whoville that night with a sleigh full of Christmas goods plus a treasure trove of Whoville data.

He got Who names, birthdates, and Whoville Security Numbers to sell identities on the dark web. He got their CapitalWho numbers and PINs to make fraudulent credit card purchases, and WhoFirst bank account numbers to drain their Whocash.

Yes, the Grinch had grand plans to wreak havoc on all Whoville. He would file false medical claims with WhoState Insurance on behalf of unsuspecting healthy Whos. He would change Whos’ passwords to lock them out of online services and send nastygrams to everywho in their WhosWho email address book. The grand prize: he would use the Mayor’s credentials to access the Whoville network, install malware, and hold the whole town government for ransom until they cancelled Christmas forever!

Back in his lair atop Mount Crumpit, the Grinch got right to work carrying out his devious plans. One of the first Whos to notice something wrong was Cindy Lou Who, of course. She saw some unauthorized purchases on her MasterWho account and could not log onto WhoFlix or Whoogle. Someone had changed her passwords!

Cindy Lou Who knew what she had to do. She froze her credit cards and called Whoville ISP Tech Support to alert them to the problem. Then Cindy immediately enrolled in Passpack, the secure password and credential creation, sharing, and management application. (She really was wise beyond her years).

Cindy-Lou used PasspackCindy used Passpack’s built-in password generator to create new, unbreakable passwords for all her accounts and locked them in Passpack’s secure vault built on zero-knowledge architecture. On top of that, Cindy created her own Packing Key, a master password known only to her so that no one – not even the Grinch – could ever access her confidential data again.

Then, stepping up to the Passpack Password Manager Business Plan, she invited the entire Whoville community to join her centralized and secure password creation and sharing group for all authorized residents, ending the Grinch’s cyber reign of terror on Whoville.

Stymied in his efforts to commit online fraud, Who identity theft, and hold the Whoville network for ransom, the Grinch re-focused on his plot to ruin Who Christmas. At least that was something he could still do.

The Grinch Heard Joyful CarolingBut then the Grinch heard the joyful caroling of Whos in the valley below, celebrating Christmas without their gifts and decorations. How could this be? Was it because the Whos knew their confidential information was safe and secure? Or maybe, just maybe, Christmas means a little bit more.

Grinch's heart grew three sizes that day.Grinch's HeartEither way, it is said the Grinch’s heart grew three sizes that day. He brought back the toys and roast beasts, the Who Hash and the Christmas trees. Cindy Lou was so impressed with his change of heart that she added the Grinch to the Whoville Passpack team. (Don’t worry, she can track all his activities and instantly revoke his privileges if he tries something funny again).
